This painting is taken from historical photos of the Leonis Adobe ca,. 1895 and is done in primarily sepia tones to evoke the feel of the original photos.

This house is located in Calabasas and is designated as Los Angeles’ first historical site. It was originally built in the 1800’s and remodeled in the Monterey style around 1880. 2005, oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in. This painting of Gustav Mahler, 20th Century composer, is from an 1917 portrait painted by Emil Orlik. Although I admire the Orlik portrait, I used the colors and emotions of what I hear and feel when listening to Mahler’s music into my painting.

With the presence of COVID 19, the inequities of America’s healthcare system shows all its flaws.
